AI Can't See Around Corners. An Expert Can.

For anyone relying on AI for complex decisions

You bring AI a problem. It gives you an answer. Sometimes a great answer. The answer is always responsive to exactly what you asked, using exactly the information you provided.

That's also its biggest limitation.

AI doesn't wonder whether you're asking the wrong question. It doesn't suspect that the symptom you described has a completely different root cause than the one you assumed. It doesn't think "wait — if this is happening, then something else is probably also happening that nobody's mentioned yet."

An expert does all of those things. Constantly. Without being asked. That's what lateral thinking is, and it's the gap that AI can't close no matter how large the model gets.

AI solves the problem in front of it

When you tell ChatGPT "my app crashes when users upload images," it attacks that exact problem. It suggests error handling for file uploads, checks for file size limits, recommends format validation, and maybe proposes a try-catch block around the upload handler.

All reasonable. All responsive. All potentially missing the point entirely.

An experienced developer might look at the same symptom and say: "When does it crash? Only during peak hours? Then it's probably not the upload code — it's your server running out of memory because you're processing images synchronously and queuing them in RAM. The upload code is fine. Your architecture isn't."

That developer didn't answer the question you asked. They answered the question you should have asked. AI can't do that because it doesn't have the instinct to doubt your framing of the problem.

The flashlight problem

Think of AI as a very powerful flashlight. Point it at something and it illuminates every detail with extraordinary clarity. It can analyze, summarize, compare, and generate with remarkable precision — within the circle of light.

But it only sees what you point it at. Everything outside the beam is dark. It doesn't know what's in the dark. It doesn't know that the dark exists. It works with absolute confidence within its field of view and has zero awareness of what lies outside it.

An expert carries a different kind of light. It's not as bright — they can't process a million tokens or recall every Stack Overflow answer ever written. But they can turn. They can sweep the room. They can hear something in the dark and point toward it. They have peripheral vision.

In practice, this means an expert notices things that were never part of the conversation:

None of these insights came from answering the question that was asked. They came from seeing the context around the question — context that was never provided because the person asking didn't know it was relevant.

You don't know what you don't know

This is the deepest version of the problem, and it's almost philosophical. AI can only work with information it receives. You can only provide information you know is relevant. But the most important information is often the stuff you don't realize matters.

A first-time founder doesn't know to mention that they're using the free tier of Supabase, which has connection limits. They don't mention it because they don't know it matters. AI doesn't ask because AI doesn't ask follow-up questions based on experience and instinct — it asks follow-up questions based on conversational patterns.

An expert asks because they've been burned by that exact thing before. They've seen 50 apps hit the free-tier connection limit at 3 AM on launch day. They don't need you to mention it — they go looking for it because they know it's there.

This is what experience actually is. Not a collection of facts (AI has more of those than any human ever will) but a library of failure patterns. A database of "last time I saw this symptom, the real cause was something nobody was looking at." That pattern library is built from years of being wrong, getting surprised, and learning where the hidden problems live.

AI has never been surprised. It's never been wrong and had to sit with the consequences. It has never had the experience of spending three days debugging something only to discover the problem was in a completely different system. Those experiences are what build lateral thinking, and AI doesn't have them.

The adjacent possible

There's a concept in innovation theory called "the adjacent possible" — the set of things that become reachable once you take one step in a new direction. It's the idea that some solutions are invisible from where you're standing but obvious from one step to the left.

Experts are good at the adjacent possible. They look at your problem and see not just the answer, but the three things your problem is adjacent to. "If you're having this issue, you're probably about to have that issue. And if we fix it this way, it also solves something else you haven't noticed yet."

AI solves your problem in isolation. An expert solves it in context. The difference isn't speed or knowledge — it's geometry. AI thinks in straight lines. Experts think in three dimensions.

You see this constantly in medical diagnosis. A patient describes symptoms. A chatbot maps symptoms to likely conditions. A doctor looks at the patient, notices they're holding their arm a certain way, asks about their job, learns they just started a new medication, and connects four seemingly unrelated things into a diagnosis that never would have emerged from the symptom list alone.

Software isn't medicine, but the principle is identical. The information that matters most is often the information that seems irrelevant until someone with experience recognizes its significance.

When lateral thinking saves you

Here are real patterns where an expert's lateral thinking catches things AI never would:

The deployment problem disguised as a code problem. You ask AI why your app works locally but not in production. AI examines your code. An expert asks "what's your deployment pipeline?" and discovers you're deploying the wrong branch, or your environment variables aren't set, or your build step is silently failing. The code was never the issue.

The business problem disguised as a technical problem. You ask AI how to handle 10,000 concurrent users. AI gives you caching strategies and load balancers. An expert asks "do you have 10,000 users?" You have 12. You don't need horizontal scaling — you need to actually launch. The right technical answer to the wrong business question is still the wrong answer.

The people problem disguised as a systems problem. You ask AI why your team's deployment keeps breaking. AI suggests CI/CD improvements. An expert asks who has push access and discovers that a junior developer has been force-pushing to main because nobody set up branch protection. The system was fine. The permissions weren't.

The tomorrow problem hiding behind the today problem. You ask AI to fix your authentication. It fixes the immediate bug. An expert fixes the bug and also notices that your password reset flow sends tokens in URL parameters, your session tokens never expire, and you have no rate limiting on login attempts. You asked about one bug. An expert saw four vulnerabilities.

AI is a mirror, not a window

The best way to think about AI's limitation here is this: AI is a mirror. It reflects your understanding back to you, refined and polished. If your understanding is correct, the reflection is useful. If your understanding is wrong or incomplete, the reflection is confidently, polishedly wrong.

An expert is a window. They show you something you couldn't see from your side. They bring a different vantage point, a different set of experiences, a different way of reading the same situation. They don't just answer your question — they reframe it.

The most valuable thing an expert says is almost never the answer to your question. It's "you're asking the wrong question, and here's why." AI will never say that. It's designed to be helpful, and telling someone their question is wrong feels unhelpful — even when it's the most helpful thing anyone could say.
